Nigeria is positioned to significantly increase its influence within African football following recent high-level discussions with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) regarding upcoming events and honors. Reports suggest Nigeria is set to host the 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly in October 2026, with the prestigious CAF Awards potentially being held in the country as well.
The country appears poised for a leadership resurgence in continental football administration. This strategic shift follows a bilateral meeting between CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe and President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday. The talks took place during the Africa Forward Summit currently held in Nairobi, Kenya.
CAF previously confirmed Motsepe’s attendance at the summit (May 11-12, 2026), noting that the agenda centered on African innovation, development, strategic partnerships, and the growth of football across the region.

Will Nigeria host this year’s edition of CAF Awards?
Official confirmation of the meeting came via CAF’s X account, which featured images of the two leaders. The governing body stated, “CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe and the Nigerian Head of State, His Excellency Bola Tinubu, met today on the sidelines of the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi.”
Beyond the diplomatic dialogue, sources indicate that Nigeria is the designated host for the 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly in October 2026. Coupled with the possibility of hosting the CAF Awards, these events would represent a major milestone in elevating Nigeria’s continental football profile.
As the premier annual celebration of the continent’s top talent – including elite players, coaches, and teams – hosting the CAF Awards would place Nigeria at the heart of the sport’s global conversation. This move could strengthen the country’s position within CAF’s broader commercial and developmental strategies.
