La Liga chief Javier Tebas has demanded the resignation of FIFA president Gianni Infantino, claiming that a string of questionable choices by world football’s governing body is harming the sport.

Expressing frustration with FIFA’s commercial priorities, Tebas asserted that football is eroding under Infantino’s stewardship. His primary grievances center on political influence in administrative decisions, prolonged halftime intervals, compulsory match breaks, and proposals to enlarge the 2030 World Cup field to 64 nations.

The head of Spanish football cautioned that FIFA’s trajectory puts domestic competitions and thousands of industry jobs at risk, arguing that global showmanship is being prioritized over the sport’s foundational stability.

Why did La Liga President called for Gianni Infantino’s resignation?

These remarks follow heightened scrutiny of Infantino after the controversial decision to rescind US forward Folarin Balogun’s suspension during the 2026 World Cup. Despite calls from key stakeholders to step aside, Infantino reportedly remains determined to stay in office and campaign for a fourth consecutive term.

Disputes between Tebas and FIFA are not new, as the two sides have repeatedly locked horns in recent years over the congested global fixture schedule and the enlarged Club World Cup format.
